The Charles J. Betters Innovation Center is a next generation educational facility that is home to the Midland Innovation + Technology Charter School (MITCS). MITCS is a public charter school serving students in grades 9-12, providing career focused curriculum opportunities across four inter-connected academies.
The new facility occupies a 5-acre reclaimed brownfield property that has been remediated to meet residential environmental standards. The master plan includes outdoor labs, work yard areas, outdoor gathering spaces, ample green space, and a walking path.
A metal building system was chosen for the economic value, compressed construction schedule, and for the opportunity to implement sustainable design features. The structure is designed to address future planned expansion at both the classroom wing and the laboratory wing. The building form and exterior materials recall the industrial past while presenting a high-tech architectural aesthetic.
